Teachers

The teachers are the most important element in any English school. Peter Bernstein chooses all our teachers. They are all highly qualified and committed to:

1 Understanding the linguistic and cultural needs of Japanese people
2 Making the timing and content of lessons as flexible as possible
3 Ensuring that the lessons are interesting and fun

Here is a little more information about some of our teachers. We have many more teachers available depending on the specific requirements of each student.

   

Peter Bernstein

Peter founded PS English. He also takes many lessons. He graduated in Languages and Law from Cambridge University. He has been teaching Japanese people for many years and has a deep understanding of the language requirements of Japanese students and the best way to improve the fluency, accuracy and range of their English.
 
Flavia McCarney
Flavia is a highly qualified and experienced English teacher who previously worked for the British Council. She has also worked in Poland, India and Indonesia.
 

Nicola Cousins
Nicola is a highly experienced English teacher. She has taught many Japanese people 1-1, including several Public Prosecutors on research secondments in London and also teaches some of our Housewife group lessons.
 

Alison Hawkes
Alison is a graduate of Oxford University and was a TV producer and writer before she started teaching. Living in Belsize Park, she also takes homestay students, many from Japan.
 

Matthew Smith
Matthew joined PS English in 2008. He previously spent 3 years teaching in Japan. He qualified as an English teacher with the highest possible grade. He has a great deal of teaching experience and a passion for Japanese language and culture
 

Helen Aitcheson
Helen is a highly qualified English teacher living in Harrow. She worked in nursing and social services in Africa and has been teaching English since 1995.
 

Jonathan Barrett
Jonathan has taught English in Tokyo and London. He also worked as a television presenter in Japan!
 

Silaja Sunthalaringham
Sijala studied English at Oxford University. She also taught in all levels at schools in Niigata and can play ?gtaiko?h (Japanese drums)!
 

Bryn Powell
Bryn spent 4 years in Madrid teaching executives from blue chip companies such as BP and Gate Gourmet. On his return to London he has continued teaching Japanese executives (and football coaches!) for PS English.
 

Deirdre Neave
Deirdre specialises in teaching language exams such as IELTS and FCE and is also an examiner for UCLES and Edexcel.
 

Martin Lewis
Martin taught English in Kyoto and Osaka and teaches Japanese businessmen and families in London.
 

Daniel Dresner
Daniel taught in Tokyo for a number of years. He then moved to New York where he became a successful actor, whilst maintaining his teaching of English to Japanese students. He has now moved back to the UK and is pleased to continue his contacts with Japanese students through PS English.
 

Hannah Chidlow
Hannah has been teaching English in a Japanese environment for seven years. She lived in Tokyo from 2000- 2003 where she worked in the state school system Hannah is well known for her patient and friendly nature.
 

NATALIE JOHNSTON
Natalie spent 2 years in Japan. She teaches businessmen and children for PS English and has proved very popular with all her studentds. She has a Masters in Human Rights Law
 

Will Thomas
Will graduated from Cambridge University. He has practised as a barrister. He has taught at PS English since it started and specialises in teaching Japanese Government researchers.
 

Henry Fagg
Henry has lived in Japan for four years in total, two of which he spent as a research scholar at Tokyo University. In his spare time he loves playing classical violin and jazz piano.
 

Chirag Batavia
Chirag taught in Japan between 2003 and 2005 for the JET Programme. He is a member of the London Kyudo Society!
He has taught many of our academic students.
 

Alan Shaw
Alan has degrees from Cambridge University and UCL. He has taken intensive conversation courses whilst studying medicine.
