For Japanese students in London, finding a suitable English school is not
easy. Many English schools in London are large, unfriendly and suitable
mainly for European students. They also focus on grammar whereas, in our
experience, Japanese students need to focus more on speaking and listening.
Our lesson style allows Japanese people to practise English skills in a
different way to school and university. It concentrates on speaking and
listening, and makes the student more fluent in language that is used in
everyday life. We sometimes use textbooks but often find that real English
materials, such as newspapers, magazines and videos, introduce students
to more natural everyday English.
In our lessons, we have three specific aims
- to allow the student to speak as much as possible
- to correct grammar/vocabulary mistakes that the student makes during the
lessons
-
to teach the student new vocabulary, phrases and idioms in every lesson
Of course all lessons are different but this an example of a typical lesson:
-
First 10 minutes - An introductory conversation in English. This could cover
any subject. The teacher uses language appropriate to the level of the student
-
Next 30 minutes - We will concentrate on one topic. We may base this period
on a textbook, a newspaper or other everyday material.
-
Next 30 minutes - A listening exercise from a specialised textbook.
-
Final 20 minutes - We will analyse the student's language mistakes and suggest
appropriate everyday English expressions.
